Description

Since 1998, The Stingers ATX have developed their own modern hybrid of Jamaican rocksteady / ska and classic American doo-wop soul: solid roots-reggae rhythms, melodic horn lines, and tight 3- and 4-part vocal harmonies. Austin, a city rich with ³roots² music (country, blues, soul), has been a supportive home for this roots- ska sextet, whose songwriting sensibility reflects the decades-old legacy of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Gregory Isaacs, Sam Cooke, the Beatles, and the Drifters. Their live shows have received much critical acclaim, from their former weekly three-hour showcases at the Black Cat Lounge in Austin to countless packed houses across Europe, including a recent stint as the opening and backing band for the “Godfather of Ska” Laurel Aitken. In late 2003, hot off the heels of their appearance on the STILL STANDING 4xCD box set (5000+ copies), Jump Up Records proudly released “This Good Thing” (with bonus tracks) to an unsuspecting US market – quickly turning these relatively unknown Texans into one of the year’s most talked about Amercian ska bands. Alternative Press even took notice by singling them out in a STILL STANDING “State of American Ska” feature. All this plus an ever increasing number of diehards keep the Stingers ATX on college radio charts throughout the United States.

In March 2004, the band recorded their second album “All in a Day” with veteran ska producer Victor Rice (Stubborn All Stars, NY Ska Jazz Ensemble, Scofflaws), showcasing a deeper understanding of traditional island elements filtered through the personality of modern-day Austin. Simply put, the songwriting is better than ever, and these dozen tunes keep you singing long after the record has stopped spinning. Reggae & Ska has never sounded so soulful, and with tours planned throughout the USA in 2004 – you too will have a chance to see what Austin TX has been hiding all these years!
