Lone Raspberry was an Orange County ska band formed in 1994, and were extremely popular across Southern California by the time “Children Of The Horn” was recorded in 1996. The band had that classic female fronted early 90s SoCal sound, trailblazed by No Doubt, Spy Kids, Gangbusters and Donkey Show – and sadly disbanded right after the completion of this debut album.
Most fans draw immediate comparisons to early No Doubt with its Gwen like vocals – but don’t call them a copycat band – there was a certain vibe at the time which created musical similarities within the tight local scene. Many call the sound ska-punk, but we’d rather label it early American third-wave ska. It’s rhythmic base is very 2-Tone, adding edgier punk guitars, funkier bass, and a big horn section. It’s a nostalgic sound from a time when ska punk bands still played authentic ska, keeping the Jamaican rhythm intact while adding punk and alternative rock influences. They’ve even got songs titled “SKINS” and “RUDE GIRL” which is very early 90s!
Lone Raspberry weren’t well known outside of California, and this first official issue on Skanking Media Force is fixing that by rewriting the history books in 2025. Not only did they organize a reunion show, a long-form interview podcast, and a color vinyl edition now available through Jump Up.
