“WORLD INVERSION” finds Flying Vipers reconstructing their latest album, “OFF WORLD” – in both strange & familiar ways; the hallmarks of classic dub versions are there, but there’s also special guest spots from Earl Sixteen and Mission of Burma’s Roger Miller. 10 tracks (including one brand new instrumental) of twisting rhythms and fleeting melodies, extending the journey through their off-beat world, which Bandcamp called “a psychedelic dub masterpiece” and WBUR dubbed “one of the most unique and memorable Boston reggae records in recent memory.”
After 10 years of instrumental dubwise reggae, the next chapter of the band arrived on their third album “OFF WORLD” (Easy Star Records) – the new addition of Kellee Webb’s soulful lead vocals adding depth to the Vipers’ cassette-crafted sound.
“WORLD INVERSION”, like it’s counterpart “OFF WORLD”, is largely comprised of original compositions, three covers encapsulate the lyrical and musical themes found throughout the LP: an alienation anthem from Northwest punk pioneers Wipers; the instrumental theme from the cult classic animated film La Planète Sauvage (featuring the acclaimed jazz harpist Brandee Younger); and most likely the first dubwise Sun Ra tribute. Their own singles, like “Believers & Deceivers” and “Jackals,” confront the grim reality of modern culture, wondering if life in America (and/or Earth) is worth fighting for or leaving behind. Through it all the drum and bass anchor the music, helping listeners to hold their ground and to guide an escape into sonic space.
Now available on Fang White and Plasma Pink Vinyl, both limited to 200 copies in collabration with Easy Star Records. Also available in a limited edition of 100 hand-numbered, laser-etched “black box” cassettes (includes new VVIPERS sticker) as an official part of Cassette Week 2025 in partnership with Jump Up Records and Tapehead City.
A deluxe CD version of OFF WORLD is also available for the first time, which includes all of WORLD INVERSION – 19 tracks total. Mini jacket edition of 100.
