American ska legends THE TOASTERS (since 1981!) deliver the goods, housed in full color picture sleeve.  “HOUSE OF SOUL” is the bands signature sound with bright horns and an uptempo beat, could easily have appeared on their classic 90s albums! The  flip “GOING HOME” is a bit more traditional sounding, dare I say THE SKATALITES? Released on the band’s own MEGALITH RECORDS.

“The Italian Job” it’s more than a concept EP,  it’s a symbolic bridge between two countries. The famous Belgian early reggae band invited the Italian singer/trombone player to join them, he soon left his mum and the pizzeria to ride his vespa through the Alps. He brought his trombone, some salami, some cheese and some classic 60′s italian songs, then he said “this time I sing in Italiano”! SKATALITES related LPs back in stock LLOYD BREVETTE “African Roots” LP – DOREEN SHAFFER “ADORABLE” LP & “GROOVIN’ ” LP

RIP Lloyd Brevette, bassist and co-founder of The Skatalites. Even though the original SKATALITES were together for just 18 months between 1963-1965, their unique melting pot of R&B, jazz, calyspo, and Latin/Cuban styles created timeless instrumentals that defined Jamaican ska for generations to come. Although most ska fans know “Eastern Standard Time”, “Guns of Navarone”, and other recordings with “Sir Coxsone” Dodd, few seem to follow their music recorded after their mid-60s heyday. “African Roots” is one such album that deserves your attention, recorded in Jamcaica between 1974-75 and re-issued by GROVER in 1995. This in essance was the band’s first “reunion” album with mixing and production duties by KING TUBBY and DUKE REID. Fourteen  original compositions (including dubs by Tubby) – a fantastic roots reggae album performed with a jazz/ska lyricism and inflection. Read the rest of this entry »
